Skiathos, Greece, located at lat/long 39°10′ N 23°29′ E, is a very green island covered by a thick pine forest and considered a protected environment. The Greek island of Skiathos forms part of The Sporades Islands which is a marine sanctuary and provides some of the best sailing in Greece.
Skiathos, despite being a small island, has a rich and eventful history. Skiathos has always been the name of the Island – Skia is Greek for “great shadow” referring to the shadows of the vast pine forests that have dominated the landscape. Following the Greek Revolution years of peace inspired poets, artists and writers, most notably Alexandros Papadiamantis. His home has been converted to a museum of his life and the main Street in Skiathos Town has taken his name. In the early 70’s Skiathos built its Airport. As the Island was so small, smaller than today, earth was reclaimed from the sea and the Island of Skiathos was joined to the Island of Lazareta, an island smaller than Skiathos, which was a former leper colony. In 2007 the Hollywood Musical “Mamma Mia” was filmed in Skiathos and Skopelos.
Location & How to Find Us
Skiathos, in the magnificent area of Sporades, is an ideal area for yacht chartering with good winds and safe overnight anchorages. The port of Skiathos is less than a 5 min taxi ride from the Airport and we will meet you at the Fresh Café, where you will be introduced to your Yacht – Lagoon like beaches, deserted islands, safe anchorages and BBQ’s on the beach are what you may expect. You may also see dolphins and seals in the Sporades Marine Sanctuary.
We chose this location as we believe it is possibly the most beautiful area of Greece to sail in whilst still offering relatively unexplored waters.
